Fiilden isim yapma (nouns derived from verb)
In this article we will explore how to make noun from verbs with the suffix -ma or -me.
The suffix to change a verb to a noun in Turkish -ma or -me is added to the root of the verb depending on its last vowel.
last vowel | verb to noun suffix |
---|---|
a-ı-o-u | -ma |
e-i-ö-ü | -me |
The general structure is like root + mA, where A → a or e.
Let us look at nouns that are derived from verb.
verb | root | noun | English translation |
---|---|---|---|
okumak | oku | okuma | reading (the act of reading) |
oturmak | otur | oturma | the act of siting |
dinlenmek | dinlen | dinlenme | the act of resting |
korumak | koru | koruma | bodyguard ( the act of protecting) |
çalışma | çalış | çalışma | the act of working |
gelmek | gel | gelme | the act of coming |
yapmak | yap | yapma | the act of making or doing |
📌 You can also think about the conversion as dropping the “k” in …mak/mek.
Nouns derived from verbs tend to be used in combination with other words forming a noun phrase.
Here are some examples.
Oda
Oturma odası
Bekleme odası
Çalışma odası
Dinlenme tesisi
Some nouns constructed from verbs are also used on their own.
Koruma
Dolma
Sarma
Yazma
Dinleme
📒 Do not confuse this with giving order for in the negative in the case of “sen(you)” where you would say “sen gelme” → “don’t come.”
You can look more about giving order or command in Turkish 🔗.
Even the very title of this article has “yapma” → “the act of making or doing” in it 🤯.
📒 Dinleme
is listening and dinlenme
is resting.
