Gibi and Kadar in Turkish

In this article we will look at how gibi and kadar are used in the Turkish.

English equivalent of **gibi ⇒ “like or as.”

English equivalent of kadar ⇒ “as much as.”

gibi → is used to describe similarity or likeness.

kadar → is used to describe the extent of similarity or likeness.

📌 Unlike English where like comes before a word or phrase, in Turkish gibi comes after a word or phrase. The same thing applies to kadar as well.

Gibi(Like, As)

like a baby → bebek gibi

like a professional → profesyonel gibi

like crazy → deli gibi

like hot cake → sıcak kek gibi

Kadar(as much as, as far as, up to) depending on the context

Senin kadar → as much as you

Benim kadar → as much as me

bir doktor kadar → as much as a doctor

İzmir’e kadar → as far as İzmir

yarına kadar → up to tomorrow

kadar (as far as)

  • O Van sınırına kadar gitti.

kadar (up to/till )

• Finish this homework up to tomorrow.

  • Bu ödevi yarına kadar bitiriniz.

• You can make the payment till the end of this month.

  • Ödemeyi bu ayın sonuna kadar yapabilirsiniz.

📌 Sometimes both work gibi and kadar can be used interchangeably.

• Ahmet senin kadar cesur değil.

• Ahmet senin gibi cesur değil.

Ahmet is not brave like you or Ahmet is not as brave as you.

More or less they mean the same thing.
