Either… or (ya…ya (da)) in Turkish

The Turkish equivalent of either…or is ya…ya (da).

Let us look at examples and see the pattern.

• She is either at Paris or Berlin.

  • O ya Paris’te ya (da) Berlin’de.

• Mert is either forgetful or doesn’t care at all.

  • Mert ya unutkandır ya (da) hiç umursamıyor.

• You can either walk or take the bus to Taksim.

  • (Sen) Taksim’e ya yürüyebilirsin ya (da) otobüs ile gidebilirsin.

• I would eat dinner either at home or at a restaurant.

  • Ben akşam yemeği ya evde yiyeceğim ya (da) restoranda yiyeceğim.

  • Ben akşam yemeği ya evde yiyeceğim ya (da) restoranda.

• You can either talk to her now or never.

  • (Sen) Onunla ya şimdi ya (da) asla konuşamazsın.

• You can either study for the exam or go to the party.

  • (Sen) Sınav için ya çalışabilirsin ya (da) partiye gidebilirsin.

• She can either cook dinner or order takeout.

  • O ya akşam yemeği pişirebilir ya (da) yemek siparişi verebilir.

• We can either watch a movie or play a game.

  • (Biz) Ya bir film izleyebiliriz ya (da) bir oyun oynayabiliriz.

• He can either read a book or listen to music.

  • O ya bir kitap okuyabilir ya (da) müzik dinleyebilir.

• You can either go to the gym or do yoga.

  • (Sen) Ya spor salonuna gidebilirsin ya (da) yoga yapabilirsin.

• They can either travel by car or by train.

  • Onlar ya araba ile ya (da) tren ile seyahat edebilirler.

• I can either write an email or make a phone call.

  • Ben ya bir e-posta yazabilirim ya (da) telefon görüşmesi yapabilirim.

• You can either buy a new phone or repair the old one.
  • (Sen) Ya yeni bir telefon satın alabilirsin ya (da) eski telefonu tamir edebilirsin.

📝 otobüs → seems to violate the vowel harmony (i.e ü and o not getting along just like 🌊 🚢.)

If it violates then why does it exist? Well it is because it is adopted from French. Yea foreign words have got this leeway in Turkish.

📝 The (da) is optional you can use either "ya…ya" or "ya…ya da." 🙃
